John’s Gospel (6: 24-35) for the 11th Sunday after Pentecost continuesfrom last week’s gospel of the loaves and fishes feeding 5,000. Some of those who had participated in that event followed Jesus and his disciples to Capernaum. Upon finding him, Jesus told them, “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you…This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
Fr. Tom Schneider preached that as we believe him, so are we to believe in him. “For the true bread of God is him who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Jesus is the bread of life. Whoever comes to him, gives themselves to him, will never be hungry, and will never thirst. Jesus is the bread that gives life to the world.
