John’s Gospel (6: 1-21) for the 10th Sunday after Pentecost includes two miracles: Loaves & Fishes, and Walking on Water. In his sermon, Fr. Tom Schneider preached there are a few schools of thought on the validity of both of these miracles: perhaps people brown-bagged their meal, and the Greek word “epi” can mean “on” or “by” the water. What we call “miracles,” John calls “signs.” These are two of the seven signs John names in his gospel; our challenge this week is finding five othersin his gospel.
Fr. Tom directed us to two verses at the end of John’s Chapter 20: “Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, signs which are not written in this book. But these are written so you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
